"color me happy" was originally opened in Bremen, GA (outiside of Atlanta) by me, Meghan Davis, in February 2004. After about a year and a half, and finding out my husband and I were expecting our 1st child, the store closed and was re-opened in October of 2005 in its current location in Brunswick, GA. Why pottery painting and why Brunswick?
I originally earned my BA in Religion at LaGrange College in LaGrange, GA. This is where my pottery addiction began. I was frequently spotted at the local studio. After serving in a couple churches I decided I wanted to do the one thing that truly made me happy..."color me happy" was born. Luckily, I am married to a very supportive (and handsome!) fella who was encouraging from the very beginning!
Brunswick is where I enjoyed spending my childhood and my parents still lived here. After asking my mom, Lois Henry, to join me as a partner in the store, we knew there was only one place we wanted to open--Historic Downtown Brunswick. We love this area. We should, we've lived here almost 20 years (minus about 8 for me!). Most people are more familier with our surrounding islands for popular vacation spots--Jekyll, St. Simons, Cumberland, Sea Island--but Brunswick is booming, as well! We've enjoyed a resurgance in the Downtown area and it is now home to many restaurants, theatres, unique shops, and its just a great way to spend the day!
My mom calls "color me happy" the best mid-life crisis she could have hoped for. In her former life she was a very successful wallpaper contractor and funiture upholsterer and still is a regular 'Jane of All Trades'. You don't have to talk to her for long to realize that she isn't from around here. She was born and raised on Long Island, NY and lived in IL and KY before moving to Brunswick in 1988. Even though she has been out of the north that long her and my dad are still very much Yankees. Nothing was ever deep fried with biscuits in our house growing up and my brother and I were not allowed to say that we were 'fixin' to do anything.
Mom and I have done so many things since we've opened that we couldn't have imagined! We've met so many fantastic people in this industry so willing to help and we've even learned a thing or two ourselves and passed on the wisdom--speaking of wisdom, I gain some everyday from being with my mom who helps me with BOTH of my little ones who are at the store with us everyday. We are so thankful to be our own bosses and doing what we love!
So this is us. Enjoying the coastal breezes and lifestyle, addicted to painting pottery and glass fusing (if we could only find the time to do it more often!), hard pressed to find anything better than the Beatles, and thankful for husbands that have supported our crazy ideas and continue to surprise us with their good ideas. A mother and daughter team who always enjoyed being creative together and now we get to do it everyday and learn and share with all our customers that quickly become our friends!
So, make sure and stick your head in to say hello and check out our studio. If you've been in before, be sure to come back soon and play again!
